OK I confess. I'm a lifeaholic, workaholic and portfolio career junky!
Author and guru Charles Handy influenced my teenage years and adult direction in life. I guess you could say he helped me sculpt the compilation lifestyle and portfolio careers that I have chosen to pursue. Back in1982 he wrote about the future of work and in particular about the portfolio worker, coining the phrase 'portfolio career'. Nowadays we speak of 'compilation career' and 'compilation lifestyle'. It resonated with me, big time. I could empathise.
I didn't (and still don't) want a 'job for life'. I knew from an early age that I was interested in lots of stuff personally and professionally i.e. leisure pursuits and types of career. I yearned to truly experience life and I wanted to experience many leisure interests and careers throughout it. I quickly realised that a lifetime might not be enough to fit it all in. And you can't do everything all in one go! But I figured you could do some of it at the same time i.e. have two or three trains going at one stage and maybe change tracks every now and then and keep the other one or two going as well ...
So, I decided to get myself a handbag full of skills so that I could make the world my oyster rather than my clam. And, I figured that I could do more than one thing at once, hence, the compilation lifestyle and portfolio career approach. I also figured that the more skills I could learn the more prepared I would be for the choices before me at whatever stage. Ultimately, by taking this approach to life I would have more control of the direction I wished to take my life ...
The Chrissie Lightfoot professional handbag of skills:
Sales, Marketing, Operations, Human Resource, Legal - the fundamentals of business nous and savvy. Oh, and Finance ... by default. Albeit I have never trained to be an accountant I had a good teacher; my dad was a chartered accountant and my tender years were spent observing he and my mum building a very successful UK wide business from the kitchen table.
Picked up a few other bits & bobs along the way having taken every opportunity to go on training and coaching coarses to satisfy my thirst for knowledge and personal and professional growth: understanding and appreciation of the power of 'the brand' (personal / professional brand and company brand), promotions, public relations, new media, social media, social networking, new marketing, relationship marketing, relationship sales, customer relationship management, innovation, business strategy & planning, business development, negotiating, persuading, emotional intelligence, management and leadership.
When you own your own businesses, have been around the block a few times, have worked in a range of forward thinking enterprises in different industries with polar cultures and have been blessed with talented mentors, proteges, friends and colleagues along the way it's surprising what you can learn and how you can grow in a short period of time!
Having experienced so much so far I feel it's time to share what I've learned and experienced with those that may perhaps benefit from 'knowing' right now.
Hence, EntrepreneurLawyer Limited and Full On Living Limited have been created. They are the sum total of my life's experience, skills, knowledge and talent ... so far. They are an extension of what and who I naturally am and mediums in which I may be able to help bring a little sunshine and understanding to those that are looking for the same...
